Local BP stores raise amazing £21,000 to fight childhood liver disease
Fourteen BP stores throughout Gloucestershire, Swindon, Bristol and Wales have spent January fundraising for Children’s Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF) and raised an incredible £21,000 for the charity, which supports children and young people with liver disease throughout the UK.
The BP team were inspired by the story of 13 year old Chloe Woodhouse from Tewkesbury whose mum, Sara works at BPs Ashchurch store. Born with a rare liver disease, Chloe received a life-saving transplant 22 months ago when her dad donated a part of his liver. The family received information and support from CLDF so when it came to choosing a charity of the month for January, Sarah’s colleagues at BP were keen to help her to give something back.
The fundraising was co-ordinated by Sarah Charles, store manager at BP Barnwood, Gloucestership, who commented: “We did some fundraising for another charity last year. Everyone enjoyed the experience and were keen to do it again. When Sarah told us how CLDF had been there for her family, it was an obvious choice. We thought this would be a great opportunity to raise awareness as well as funds for a charity that many people just do not know about.”
The month of enthusiastic fundraising included raffles, karaoke, sponsored silences, runs, waxes, a walk up Breedon Hill, a race night and a static 10,000 mile bike ride which staff and customers were encouraged to join in.
“We have had great fun doing this,” continues Sarah. “Our staff love any excuse to get dressed up and have fun, it all helps to build great teams and good relationships with local communities. Of course there has been some healthy competition amongst the stores to see who can raise the most money for such a fantastic cause!”
Alison Taylor, Chief Executive of Children’s Liver Disease Foundation commented: “CLDF is the only UK charity dedicated to fighting all forms of childhood liver disease. We do this by providing information to families and to healthcare professionals, emotional support to young people and their families, funds for research and a voice for everyone affected. To do this we rely almost entirely on voluntary donations so we are so grateful for what these BP stores have done for us. This is a tremendous total which shows real hard work and commitment to fundraising. The money raised will make a real difference to families like Chloe’s around the UK.
