A grandmother from Stanway (near Colchester) will be taking part in the London Marathon next weekend (Sunday October 2) to raise funds for a cause very close to her heart, Children’s Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF).
Kathy Bishop’s three year old granddaughter, Delilah, was diagnosed with the rare and incurable liver disease, biliary atresia, when she was just six weeks old.
“Delilah underwent surgery when she was a few weeks old to prolong the life of her native liver and although she is doing well now, she still needs to undergo procedures at Kings College Hospital every six months, and the chances are that she will need a liver transplant one day,” explains Kathy. “It’s a lot for any young family to contend with but Children’s Liver Disease Foundation have always been on hand for Delilah’s parents with information and support and will be there for Delilah too as she grows up.

“As a nurse myself, I have witnessed first- hand the heartache relatives go through having their loved ones in hospital, so I know just how valuable this support is.
“I have always wanted to do the London Marathon and what better way to do it than raising funds for a fantastic cause? I was due to run last year but had to defer my entry to this year due to injury, preventing me running for several months. Thankfully I have managed to put the running shoes back on and training is going well.
“I set myself a target of £3,500 and am delighted to have surpassed that already. I have been amazed with the generosity and support from people with my fundraising to date and hope this continues, raising more for Children’s Liver Disease Foundation.
“As the big day approaches, I’m really looking forward to it. I know it’s going to be tough but I’ve got my motivation. Delilah is such a happy, loving little girl thanks to the amazing strength, love and care from her mummy and daddy. They have all been so strong and I’m going to do them all proud!”
Rebecca Cooper, Chief Executive of Children’s Liver Disease Foundation commented: “CLDF is the only UK charity dedicated to fighting all childhood liver diseases, by providing information and emotional support, funds for research and a voice for all those affected. In order to do this however, we rely on voluntary donations, so it’s brilliant to know that Kathy is doing the London Marathon for us and that she is doing so well with her fundraising. We wish her all the best for the day and hope her first London Marathon is a fantastic experience.”
