Schools join in Big Yellow Friday for cause close to their hearts

Two Sheffield schools raised over £750 by swapping their usual uniform for yellow to join in Big Yellow Friday, the national fundraising day for Children’s Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF).

The charity is close to the hearts of the pupils of Beighton Nursery and Infant School as one of their pupils, five-year-old Hannah Wallace, was born with the rare liver disease, biliary atresia. She has already undergone three liver transplants, but last autumn her parents were told that she needs another. As her family wait for the vital call to say that a suitable liver is available, Hannah needs to be free from Covid19 to undergo surgery and is therefore currently unable to go to school.

“It’s very frustrating for Hannah because she loves school and she’s currently in good spirits”, explains mum, Amanda. “So, it really meant a lot to us to see her classmates supporting Big Yellow Friday in this way.”

Pupils at Beighton raised £256.56 with their Wear Yellow Day and learned a bit more about children who live with liver disease. And although Hannah couldn’t be with them, she joined them via Zoom for a special assembly.

The goodwill extended to Brook House Junior School where Hannah’s 10-year-old sister, Mia is a pupil. Their Wear Yellow Day and bake sale raised a fantastic £503.10.

“CLDF is the only UK charity dedicated to fighting all forms of childhood liver disease,” explains the charity’s interim CEO, Katherine Myles. “Like all smaller charities, the pandemic hit us hard so we’re delighted that Big Yellow Friday can take place again and it’s wonderful to see these schools showing such support for Hannah and her family. The funds raised will make a real difference to children throughout the UK who are affected by liver disease.”

Childhood liver disease – the facts

Many people do not realise that liver disease even affects children but:

  • Every week in the UK, 20 babies, children or young people are diagnosed with a rare liver disease
  • There is still no cure
  • All childhood liver diseases mean a lifetime of medical care and, in many cases, a liver transplant.

Children’s Liver Disease Foundation helps by

  • Providing emotional support to young people with liver disease and their families
  • Providing clear and accurate information on all aspects of childhood liver disease to families and to health professionals
  • Funding research into causes and treatments
  • Acting as a voice for everyone affected.
