Training was going well until June when I suffered a knee injury and had to take a month off running. So I’m really pleased to have finished ten minutes ahead of my target time. It was tough going but an amazing experience. And to date I’ve raised £295, although my final total will be matched by my employer, BGL Group so any further donations will be gratefully received!”

Alison Taylor, Chief Executive of Children’s Liver Disease Foundation commented: “CLDF is the only UK charity dedicated to fighting all childhood liver diseases, by providing information and emotional support, funds for research and a voice for all those affected. In order to do this however, we rely almost entirely on voluntary donations, so we are very grateful for Anthony’s efforts and delighted that he enjoyed the experience. The funds he has raised will help children like Oliver throughout the UK.”

However, CLDF were there for me and put me in touch with other young people who live with liver disease. I even joined them for a film-making workshop last year with other teenagers. I not only met other people who understood me, but I was able to show my film at school to explain what it’s like to live with liver disease.

CLDF has welcomed today’s news from NHS Blood and Transplant that last year, 1,600 people in the UK donated their organs after they died; saving or improving the lives of 3,941 transplant recipients and giving hope to those still waiting.

This achievement is particularly remarkable given that figures now show that just 5,815 people died in circumstances where organ donation is possible. With fewer eligible donors, it is more important than ever to ensure that everyone who is able and wants to donate their organs after they have died is given the opportunity.

The increase in the number of organ donors was made possible thanks to more families agreeing to support donation, fewer families refusing to support their relative’s decision to donate and an increased referral rate of potential donors by medical staff to organ donation teams.

CLDF Chief Executive, Alison Taylor commented: “These figures are good news and demonstrate how important it is that people make their wishes on organ donation known to their loved ones.”

In 2020, the law around organ donation will be changing in both England and Scotland. Both countries will be introducing an opt out system for organ donation, just as Wales did in December 2015 and Jersey from 1st July 2019.

Wales now has the highest consent rate of all the UK nations, now 77%, up from 58% in 2015. It is hoped that once the law change comes into force in both England and Scotland, and as awareness of organ donation is heightened in the public consciousness, we will see similar increases across both these countries.

A mum of three from Lisburn will be fulfilling a lifelong ambition next Sunday (May 26) when she does her first sky dive, raising much needed funds for a cause very close to her heart, Children’s Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF).

Amanda Withers’ four year old son Daniel was born with the rare liver disease, Alagilles syndrome, and she and her family have had information and support from the charity ever since he was diagnosed.

“When your child has a rare disease, it’s easy to feel isolated but the CLDF team are always on hand with support, whether it’s over the phone by email or coming to see us when we are at hospital clinic visits,” says Amanda. “They also organise special weekends for families in Northern Ireland whose children have liver disease and we really enjoy these. It’s great to feel part of a family and realise that you’re not alone.

“A sky dive is something I have always wanted to do, so has my sister, Susanne, and my cousin, Ruth. We always said we would do it together but with myself and my sister having three children each, the past few years have never suited with someone always being pregnant! Now the time is right, and it seems the perfect way of raising some money for CLDF as a thank you. We’re delighted to have raised over £1,000 already. As the day gets nearer, we’re all very excited but sure the nerves will kick in on the day!

Alison Taylor, Chief Executive of Children’s Liver Disease Foundation commented: “CLDF is the only UK charity dedicated to fighting all childhood liver diseases, by providing information and emotional support, funds for research and a voice for all those affected. In order to do this however, we rely on voluntary donations, so we’re delighted to hear what Amanda, Susanne and Ruth have planned. We hope they enjoy the experience and the funds raised will continue to make a difference to families throughout the UK affected by childhood liver disease.”

Congenital portosystemic shunts and the development of liver tumours: characterisation of the genetic and histopathologic background to identify the progression of molecular alterations

Professor Richard John Thompson, Dr Athanasios Tyraskis, Professor Mark Davenport, Professor Nigel Heaton, Dr Alberto Quaglia.

Congenital portosystemic shunts (CPS) occur when the blood vessels around the liver aren’t formed properly so the blood doesn’t flow through, in and around the liver as it should. In some cases of CPS, blood from the intestines, pancreas and spleen (called portal venous blood) bypasses the liver straight into the main blood circulation in the body. In other cases blood from the hepatic artery may take on the role of supplying nutrients to the liver instead of the portal vein. These changes can affect the chemical balance inside the liver. It isn’t know exactly why, but people who have CPS are more likely to develop tumours. This study aimed to find out why this is.

This grant has taken the work a long way and has opened several new areas of investigation. Please view the abstract poster, kindly provided by Dr Athanasios Tyraskis, which explains the findings of this study:Congenital portosystemic shunts and the development of liver tumours
