Band clocks up Miles for Music to help good causes

The Werneth Concert Band prides itself on being open to everyone, with amateur musicians from 16 to 85 playing together for their own enjoyment and that of the local community. When the pandemic prevented the band from rehearsing and performing together in person, they were all still keen to continue that community spirit. And so, the Miles for Music challenge was born.

The Miles for Music challenge exceeded expectations

“Being unable to perform meant we have not been bringing in funds for the upkeep of our premises at Chadkirk Business Park and the future development of the band,” explained euphonium player and challenge co-organiser, Sarah Quilliam. “So we decided to ask band members to get sponsored for covering the 360 miles from Manchester to Land’s End through walking, cycling or even doing Zumba, over a nine day period in May.

“We aimed to raise £500 and give half of this to our chosen charities, the Wellspring homeless charity who do amazing work in Stockport, and Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, a cause very close to our hearts.

“The challenge clearly captured everyone’s imagination because, despite some very soggy weather, we not only clocked up enough miles to get to Land’s End, we made it all the way back again! And even better, we smashed our original fundraising target and have now raised over £2000.

“It won’t be long now until we can all play together again but, in the meantime, it’s great to have done something so positive to keep the band going and support charities which mean a lot to us.”

The Werneth Concert Band are looking forward to performing together soon.

Fellow euphonium player, John Glynn, whose grandson has a rare liver disease, is delighted that the band can now donate £500 to Children’s Liver Disease Foundation. “This charity provided my family with vital information and support when my grandson was diagnosed. Fortunately, he is now doing well but we want that support to be there for every family who needs it. Like all charities, CLDF have had a very tough year so it’s great to be able to support them in this way.”

Band member, John Glynn, was particularly keen to clock up the miles for his chosen charity.
