Big day for Luna

It’s back to school time for thousands of children and for two year old Luna, this week marks a a major milestone – her first day at nursery.

Parents, Sophie and Jordan admit that, this time last year, they didn’t think that nursery would be a possibility.

“She had so many hospital admissions next year, it was hard to see how she could be in a position where we could even consider nursery,” says Sophie. “And even though her health has still been up and down this year, she has now gone nearly three months without a hospital admission, which is the longest she’s managed.

“Luna will be doing three hours a day Monday to Friday and the nursery have been very good in terms of preparation.  We’ve given them a copy of the CLDF education pack and have also had a few meetings with them to discuss her condition and alert them of things they need to look out for. Our community nurse came to one of the meetings too, to discuss her ng tube, which was very helpful.

“Obviously I have very mixed emotions about her going to nursery. On one hand, it’s brilliant that she will get to mix with other children her age and will learn so much but on the other hand I’m worried that every illness she picks up could land her in hospital. However, we do have plans in place for if she becomes unwell at nursery and I don’t want the fact that she has a liver condition to hold her back in other aspects of her development.

“She really has come such a long way and I’m nervous and excited to watch her take this next step!”
