Like many people, Vicky had done lots of running when she was younger but stopped when life got in the way. Recent events in her family, however, mean she’s now ready for her first marathon, as she explains.
I loved running when I was younger and even competed in cross country events and triathlons as a teenager. When I finished university and started my career as a physiotherapist, however, it wasn’t so easy to fit everything in and the running tailed off.
I was motivated to get back into it, however, after hearing about the tough time my cousin, Mike and his family have been through. Mike’s little boy, Max was born with biliary atresia, a rare and serious liver disease which none of us had even heard of. Initial surgery was unsuccessful and after months of investigations, tests and hospital stays, Max was given a liver transplant when he was just seven months old.
It was a really difficult time for the whole family and I know that Children’s Liver Disease Foundation were there for them with information and support throughout. Fortunately the surgery was a success . Max recently celebrated his one year transplant anniversary and is now a happy and healthy toddler.
I decided I wanted to give back to this amazing charity who had helped the family so much so it felt like it was time to get back running again! I was lucky enough to get a ballot place in the London Marathon which gives me a great opportunity for fundraising and I’m delighted to have already beaten my £750 target.
Since getting my place I’ve loved running consistently again and enjoyed challenging myself. Fundraising has really helped to motivate me in my training and now the big day is almost here I’m really looking forward to it. It’s great to be able to give back to an incredible charity and raise awareness of childhood liver disease.
