Vintage car run raises over £2500 to fight childhood liver disease

A County Down church has raised over £2500 to support young people with liver disease by hosting a vintage car run.

Over 150 vehicles – some almost 100 years old– took part in the Carrowdore and Ballyfrenis Church vintage car run, a 25-mile cavalcade around the picturesque Ards peninsula, on August 2. The annual event raises money for good causes and this year the congregation chose Children’s Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF) as one of its members has a granddaughter who has a rare liver condition and has received support from the Foundation for a number of years.

The cheque was accepted on behalf of the charity by 22-year-old Megan McGillin from Newtownards, who herself has a childhood liver condition: “I was delighted to support this fundraiser so close to my home,” she said. I saw it as an opportunity to shine a light on all the young people here in Northern Ireland living with a liver condition and the amazing work CLDF does to support them. “

Michelle Wilkins, Head of Children’s and Families’ Services at Children’s Liver Disease Foundation added: “We’re dedicated to fighting all childhood liver diseases by providing families affected with information, emotional support and a voice for everyone affected. But we rely on voluntary donations, so we’re delighted and so grateful for the support of Carrowdore and Ballyfrenis Church. The vintage car run sounds like it was an amazing event, and this is a fantastic fundraising total!”
